Horizontal convective rolls

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006274

Elongated, counter-rotating circulations that form in the atmospheric boundary layer under conditions of moderate wind shear and sufficient surface heating. These rolls align approximately parallel to the mean wind direction and are responsible for organizing cumulus clouds into cloud streets. They typically have wavelengths ranging from 3 to 15 kilometers and can extend for hundreds of kilometers.
