Longitudinal section
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007035
A vertical cross-section of the atmosphere oriented parallel to a specific direction, such as a line of longitude or the axis of a weather system like a front or jet stream. It displays the vertical distribution of meteorological variables, including temperature, wind, and moisture, along the chosen path. These sections are used to analyze the structure of atmospheric phenomena, contrasting with transverse sections which are cut perpendicular to the primary flow.
