Langmuir circulation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006866

A series of shallow, helical circulation cells in the upper ocean, aligned with the wind direction. These cells are characterized by alternating convergences and divergences at the surface, which can concentrate floating debris or marine organisms into visible streaks. They are driven by the interaction of wind stress and surface waves, typically forming in winds exceeding 3 meters per second.
