Cellular circulation
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004218
An organized pattern of fluid motion characterized by a network of distinct, repeating cells of rising and sinking air. This circulation is driven by buoyancy differences, with warmer, less dense air ascending and cooler, denser air descending in an adjacent region. Bénard cells, which form in a fluid layer heated from below, are a classic example of this phenomenon.
