Bénard cell

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003883

A pattern of convective cells that forms in a fluid layer heated from below and cooled from above, or when a fluid is subjected to a temperature gradient. The fluid circulates in a regular, hexagonal pattern, with warmer fluid rising in the center and cooler fluid sinking at the edges. This phenomenon is a classic example of self-organization in fluid dynamics and can be observed in atmospheric boundary layers.
