Benchmark

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-000314

  1. A reference point or standard used for comparison in meteorological measurements or models. It provides a stable and well-defined value against which other observations or predictions can be evaluated. For example, a long-term average temperature for a specific location serves as a benchmark for assessing climate change.

  2. (Abbrev. BM) - In hydrologic terms, a permanent point whose known elevation is tied to a national network. These points are created to serve as a point of reference. Benchmarks have generally been established by the USGS, but may have been established by other Federal or local agencies. Benchmarks can be found on USGS maps.
