Sea level measurements

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-008716

Observations of the height of the ocean surface relative to a fixed reference point on land or in space. These measurements are obtained using tide gauges, which record local sea level, or satellite altimetry, which provides global coverage. Tide gauges typically measure sea level hourly, while satellite altimeters provide data every 10 days for a given location.
