Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003884

A long-term, stable meteorological or climatological observing site used as a reference standard for monitoring climate variability and change. These stations are located in areas minimally affected by local artificial influences, such as urbanization or land-use changes, to provide a representative record of regional climate. The Global Climate Observing System (GCOS) Reference Upper-Air Network (GRUAN) is an example of a network that includes benchmark stations for atmospheric measurements.
