Baseline monitoring

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003848

The systematic, long-term measurement of atmospheric composition and physical parameters at locations minimally affected by local or regional pollution sources. These measurements establish background concentrations and natural variability, providing a reference against which to assess the impact of human activities and climate change. The World Meteorological Organization's Global Atmosphere Watch (GAW) program operates a network of baseline observatories for this purpose.
