Basic flow
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003849
The fundamental, often time-averaged or spatially averaged, component of a fluid flow upon which smaller-scale disturbances or perturbations are superimposed. It represents the underlying, stable current or wind pattern in a system. In atmospheric dynamics, the basic flow might refer to the zonal mean wind, which provides the environment for the development of synoptic-scale weather systems.
