Perturbation equation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010660

A mathematical equation derived by linearizing the full governing equations of fluid dynamics around a basic state, allowing for the study of small disturbances. These equations describe the evolution of small deviations from an equilibrium or mean flow, often assuming that the perturbations are much smaller than the basic state variables. They are widely used in atmospheric and oceanic modeling to analyze the stability of flows and the growth of atmospheric waves.
