Balance equation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003784

A diagnostic equation in meteorology that relates the geopotential field to the wind field, specifically the rotational part of the horizontal wind. It is derived from the horizontal momentum equations by assuming a state of quasi-geostrophic balance and neglecting the time derivative of divergence. This equation is often used in numerical weather prediction models to initialize the wind field from the mass field.
