Closed-cell stratocumulus

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004400

A type of stratocumulus cloud formation where individual cloud elements are arranged in distinct, often hexagonal or polygonal, cells with clear spaces between them. This pattern is indicative of relatively weak convection within a stable layer, with rising air in the cloud cells and sinking air in the clear areas. It is frequently observed over oceans and can precede the development of more organized cloud systems.
