A pattern of shallow convection characterized by polygonal or hexagonal shapes of clear air surrounded by narrow walls of cumulus clouds. These structures typically form over oceans in cold air outbreaks, where cold air flows over warmer water. The clear centers are areas of subsidence, while the cloud walls indicate rising air.
