Mesoscale cellular convection
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007217
A pattern of organized convection in the atmospheric boundary layer, characterized by distinct, often hexagonal, cells of rising and sinking air. These cells are visible in satellite imagery as cloud patterns, with open cells having clear centers and cloudy boundaries, and closed cells showing cloudy centers with clear boundaries. The type of cell formed depends on the stability of the atmosphere and the temperature difference between the air and the underlying surface.
