Closed cells

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004394

A pattern of mesoscale cellular convection in which cloud-filled cells, often polygonal, are ringed by narrow cloud-free borders, seen in satellite images of stratocumulus. Air rises in the cloudy center and sinks at the clear edges. Closed cells occur over cool ocean water under a strong inversion, while open cells with clear centers form in colder air moving over warmer water.
