Langmuir number
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-006868
A dimensionless quantity used in fluid dynamics to characterize the strength of wind-driven mixing relative to wave-induced motion in the upper ocean. It is defined as the square root of the ratio of the water's friction velocity to the Stokes drift velocity of the surface waves. When the Langmuir number is less than approximately 0.3, strong Langmuir circulation is expected to develop.
