Cauchy number

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004204

A dimensionless quantity used in fluid dynamics to represent the ratio of inertial forces to elastic forces in a compressible flow. It is calculated as the fluid density multiplied by the square of the velocity, divided by the bulk modulus of elasticity. The Cauchy number is relevant for studying phenomena where fluid compressibility is a dominant factor, such as in high-speed gas dynamics and acoustics.
