Cat's paw
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-004203
A pattern of localized, light ripples on an otherwise calm water surface, created by a small-scale, isolated gust of wind. These patches of darker, textured water move quickly across the surface, revealing the brief passage of a downdraft or puff of air. The term is descriptive, likening the appearance of the disturbed water to the light touch of a cat's paw.
