Wind-driven oceanic circulation

Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-010278

The large-scale movement of ocean waters primarily forced by the stress of wind on the sea surface. This circulation includes major gyres and currents that redistribute heat and marine life across the globe. The Coriolis effect and basin topography significantly modify these wind-induced flows, leading to complex patterns like western boundary currents.
