Boundary currents
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-003996
Strong, narrow ocean currents that flow along the eastern or western edges of ocean basins, driven by wind stress and the Earth's rotation. Western boundary currents, such as the Gulf Stream, are warm, fast, and deep, while eastern boundary currents are cooler, broader, and shallower. These currents are a major component of global ocean circulation and heat transport.
