Munk boundary layer
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-007464
A theoretical frictional boundary layer on the western side of an ocean basin, used to explain the formation of intense western boundary currents like the Gulf Stream. In models of wind-driven ocean circulation, this layer incorporates lateral friction (viscosity) to balance the vorticity input by the wind stress curl across the basin. The inclusion of this friction is necessary to create a closed circulation gyre with a narrow, fast-flowing current on its western edge.
