Gyres
Term · Meteorology and atmospheric science · MLC-T-MET-001226
Large systems of rotating ocean currents, driven by global wind patterns, the Coriolis effect, and landmasses, that circulate within major ocean basins. These vast circulations transport heat, nutrients, and marine organisms across thousands of kilometers. Examples include the North Atlantic Gyre and the South Pacific Gyre, which are fundamental components of the global ocean circulation system.
Oceanic current systems of planetary scale driven by the global wind system.
