Shear
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003356
A type of stress that causes parts of a body to slide relative to each other in a direction parallel to their plane of contact. In geophysics, this deformation is associated with shear waves, or S-waves, which involve particle motion perpendicular to the wave's direction of travel. Unlike compressional stress, shear stress changes the shape of a material without changing its volume, and its magnitude is measured in pascals.
