Shear

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005204

A material failure or cutting process that occurs when parallel but opposing forces cause one part of an object to slide relative to an adjacent part. In metalworking, it is a method for cutting sheet metal or plate by applying sufficient force with two blades to induce this type of fracture. The force required is a function of the material's shear strength and the cross-sectional area being cut.
