Shay

A type of geared steam locomotive characterized by its offset boiler and vertical cylinders driving a crankshaft that transmits power to all wheels via drive shafts and bevel gears. This design provided superior traction and power at low speeds, making it ideal for logging, mining, and industrial railways with steep grades and sharp curves. Shay locomotives were produced by the Lima Locomotive Works.
