Locomotive

A self-propelled rail vehicle that provides the tractive effort for a train, without carrying a payload of its own. It contains the prime mover, which converts fuel or electrical energy into mechanical power to drive the wheels. Locomotives are classified by their power source, such as diesel-electric, electric, or steam, and are distinct from multiple units, where traction motors are distributed among passenger or freight cars.
