Diesel locomotive

A type of railway locomotive that uses a diesel engine as its prime mover. The diesel engine typically drives an electric generator, which in turn powers electric traction motors (diesel-electric), or it can directly drive the wheels through a mechanical transmission (diesel-mechanical). Diesel locomotives are widely used for freight and passenger service globally.
