Steam generator

Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005634

A device used on diesel or electric locomotives to produce steam for heating passenger cars, a function originally performed by the steam locomotive itself. These units are self-contained, oil-fired water-tube boilers that automatically maintain steam pressure for the train's heating system. A common model, the Vapor-Clarkson steam generator, could produce over 2,000 pounds of steam per hour while being compact enough to fit within the locomotive's carbody.
