Compound

A type of steam locomotive engine that uses steam expansively in two or more stages, first in high-pressure cylinders and then in larger low-pressure cylinders. This design extracts more work from the steam, improving fuel efficiency compared to simple expansion engines. Compound locomotives were developed to achieve greater power and economy.
