Prime mover

A self-contained engine or motor that converts fuel or another energy source into mechanical energy to power a vehicle or piece of equipment. In automotive contexts, this is typically the internal combustion engine that drives the wheels. Diesel engines are common prime movers in heavy-duty trucks.
