Lockup
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-003403
The state or mechanism in which two rotating parts, which can otherwise slip or turn at different rates, are mechanically coupled to rotate as a single unit. A common example is the torque converter lockup clutch in an automatic transmission, which engages at steady speeds to create a direct drive from the engine, eliminating hydraulic slippage. This state is distinct from the complete seizure of moving parts due to mechanical failure, which is also sometimes called lockup.
