Electric multiple unit

A self-propelled passenger train consisting of multiple cars, where each car or a subset of cars has its own electric motors for propulsion. This configuration eliminates the need for a separate locomotive, allowing for faster acceleration and deceleration. Electric multiple units are widely used for commuter and regional services.
