An abbreviation for Dynamic Brake, a system on diesel-electric or electric locomotives that uses the traction motors as generators to slow the train. The kinetic energy of the moving train is converted into electricity by the motors, and this electrical energy is then dissipated as heat through large, fan-cooled resistor grids. This braking method reduces wear on the friction brakes of the locomotive and rail cars, especially on steep downgrades.
