A decibel, a logarithmic unit used to express the ratio of two values of a physical quantity, such as power or intensity. In geophysics, it quantifies the relative amplitude of seismic signals, noise, or attenuation. A 3 dB increase represents a doubling of power, while a 10 dB increase represents a tenfold increase.
