Stirrup
Term · Industrial and trades · MLC-T-IND-005660
A closed loop of reinforcing bar or wire that encloses the main longitudinal reinforcement in concrete beams, columns, or other structural members. Stirrups resist shear forces and prevent diagonal tension cracks, while also holding the main bars in position during concrete placement. They are typically spaced at intervals along the length of the member, with closer spacing in areas of higher shear stress.
