The minimum required thickness of concrete between the outer surface of a reinforcing bar (rebar) and the nearest exterior surface of the concrete member. This layer of concrete protects the steel reinforcement from corrosion by preventing exposure to moisture, chemicals, and fire. Building codes, such as ACI 318, specify minimum cover distances based on the type of structural member and its environmental exposure conditions.
