Shear strength
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003363
The resistance of a material to deformation or fracture when subjected to shear stress. In drilling fluids, shear strength, often referred to as gel strength, is the minimum stress required to initiate flow after the fluid has been static. It is measured in pounds per 100 square feet (lb/100 ft^2) or Pascals (Pa) and indicates the fluid's ability to suspend solids when circulation stops.
