  1. A semi-solid, jelly-like state of a drilling fluid that forms when the fluid is static, exhibiting a measurable yield stress. This structure develops due to the attractive forces between solid particles suspended in the liquid phase. Gels are reversible, breaking down to a fluid state when shear is applied, and are measured in pounds per 100 square feet.

  2. The semi-solid, jelly-like structures that form in a drilling fluid when it is at rest, providing the ability to suspend drill cuttings and weighting agents. These structures are thixotropic, meaning they break down under shear and reform when static. The strength of these gels is measured in pounds per 100 square feet.
