Thixotropic

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003816

Describing a fluid that exhibits a time-dependent decrease in viscosity under shear stress, followed by a gradual recovery of viscosity when the stress is removed. Drilling fluids are designed to be thixotropic, allowing them to flow easily during circulation and then gel to suspend cuttings when circulation stops. This property is characterized by gel strength measurements.
