Thixotropy
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003817
The property of certain fluids to exhibit a decrease in viscosity when subjected to shear stress, and then to gradually regain their original viscosity when the stress is removed. This characteristic is desirable in drilling fluids, enabling them to flow during pumping and then gel to prevent cuttings from settling. It is quantified by measuring initial and progressive gel strengths.
