Shear stress
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003364
A force acting parallel to a surface, causing deformation or flow within a fluid. In drilling fluids, shear stress is the force per unit area exerted on the fluid as it flows through pipes or the annulus. It is measured in pounds per 100 square feet (lb/100 ft^2) or Pascals (Pa) and is directly related to the fluid's viscosity and shear rate.
