S-wave
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-003720
A shear wave, which is a type of seismic body wave that propagates through a medium by particle motion perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation. S-waves cannot travel through fluids, making them useful for distinguishing between liquid and solid formations in the subsurface. Their velocity is generally slower than P-waves and provides information about the shear modulus of the rock.
