P wave
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-002670
A compressional wave, also known as a primary wave, that propagates through a medium by alternating compressions and dilations parallel to the direction of wave travel. P-waves are the fastest seismic waves and are the first to arrive at a seismograph. They can travel through solids, liquids, and gases, and their velocity is dependent on the bulk modulus and density of the material.
