Dilatational wave
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001089
A seismic wave in which the particle motion is parallel to the direction of wave propagation, causing compressions and rarefactions in the medium. Also known as a P-wave (primary wave) or compressional wave, it is the fastest type of seismic wave. P-waves are used extensively in seismic exploration to image subsurface structures.
