Dilatation

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001088

The change in volume per unit volume of a material, representing its volumetric strain. In geophysics, it describes the expansion or contraction of rock formations under stress. This property is related to the bulk modulus of the material and is a component of the strain tensor in continuum mechanics.
