Bulk modulus
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000484
A measure of a substance's resistance to uniform compression from all directions, expressed as the ratio of a small pressure increase to the resulting fractional decrease in volume. For geophysicists, it is a key elastic property of rocks that governs how they respond to changes in confining pressure. The bulk modulus is a component, along with density and shear modulus, in the equations that determine the velocity of seismic P-waves through a medium.
