Bulk relaxation

Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-000485

The nuclear magnetic resonance relaxation that a fluid undergoes by itself, away from any pore surface, set by molecular motion and interactions within the fluid. It depends on viscosity and temperature, with low-viscosity water relaxing in about 2 to 3 seconds and heavy oil in milliseconds. It is one of three contributions to the measured T2 of a rock, alongside surface relaxation at the grain walls and diffusion relaxation in field gradients.
