Dephasing
Term · Oil and gas · MLC-T-OAG-001001
The process by which nuclear magnetic moments, initially aligned by a magnetic field, lose their coherent transverse alignment. This loss of phase coherence is caused by interactions with local magnetic field inhomogeneities and spin-spin relaxation. The rate of dephasing is characterized by the transverse relaxation time, T2, which is a key parameter measured in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) logging to estimate pore size distribution and fluid type.
