Dephasing
Term · Chemistry · MLC-T-CHM-003021
The loss of coherence among an ensemble of oscillating dipoles or spins, leading to a decay in the macroscopic signal observed in spectroscopic experiments. This phenomenon arises from interactions with the environment or from intrinsic inhomogeneities within the sample. It contributes to the broadening of spectral lines, such as in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy.
